GOOD BYE FLORENT
Some people think that NYC is a beast of a city, impersonal and cold to everyone and everything that passes through. But I grew up there, I know it’s a big city made up of lots of small neighborhoods with strong senses of community and warmth. That has been changing though since the shameless over-development began and neighborhoods that were once filled with character and a community were soon swallowed up by fat money hungry pigs.
Where I grew up in NYC there was one diner, Florent, that was at the heart of the neighborhood community, physically and figuratively speaking. It started out as a seedy little spot in a neighborhood filled with tranvestites, prostitutes, and all around debauchery and in true New York Style Florent turned into a legendary restaurant in an area that soon lost everything that it was with the arrival of fashion studios, boutiques, and bullshit restaurants. This past week, due to absurdly high rent rises, Florent had to close its doors for the last time. There was a huge party, and the NY Times covered the event. And of course in the front photo of the article…
Whats that little orange scribble on the black next to the door? Yup. I guess I caught a little tag there at one point, probably right after stuffing myself with a fat plate of their unbeatable Macaroni & Cheese.
